NAMM 2017: Dean Basses

Let`s take a look at Dean`s bass updates from this year`s NAMM.

NAMM 2017: Dean Basses

Dean`s bass range has become significantly bigger and more versatile at this year`s NAMM with nine new models and one new series introduced.

Along with the rest of the updates and novelties, Dean has exhibited a number of new electric and acoustic basses. Nine models fell into this category with all nine being non-signature installments. Seven models went to the traditional Edge range, while one model kicked off the modern, aggressive Razorback series. Finally, one acoustic-electric model completed the lineup. Basic Edge 1 series was represented with two models – Edge 1 5-String and Edge 1 PJ. Edge 2 line has admitted four new entries – Edge 2, Edge 2 5-String, Edge 2 Burled Maple and Edge 2 Spalt Maple. Edge 3`s only model was the eponymous four-stringed Edge 3. Four-stringed Razorback Bass was the only Razorback series model around. Further models are expected down the line. Exotica Supreme Cutaway A/E Bass in Tobacco Sunburst completed the lineup of new for 2017 Dean basses.

Dean Edge 1 5-String is the most basic model of the newly introduced Edge bunch. It rocks a lone humbucker in bridge position, flat-top body, bolt-on neck and 24-fret fingerboard. It is currently available only in Vintage Natural with black hardware. Dean Edge 1 PJ is second of two Edge 1 models. As opposed to a robust humbucker on previous model, PJ rocks a set of two pickups – a jazz pickup in the bridge and P pickup in the neck. Other than that, and color palette, these two Edge 1 models are one and the same. Dean Edge 2 builds on the standard Edge 1 model, offering additional humbucking pickup in the neck position. Other than that, and belonging controls configuration, these two models are identical. Even the color palette is the same, as it includes only the Vintage Natural (with black hardware) option. Dean Edge 2 5-String is a true powerhouse with a reasonable price, to boot. It offers a solid, flat basswood body, two DMT Design humbuckers and a long (34”) scaled fingerboard with 14 frets. Charcoal Burst and Trans Red comprise the color palette. Both come in with satin finish and black hardware. Dean Edge 2 Burled Maple is, essentially, the regular two-pickup Edge 2 with a burled top. Other than that, and of course the color palette, these two are identical. Solid and double-cut Edge body, bolt-on maple neck, long-scale fingerboard with 24 frets and black hardware are all there. The price is set at $249.00. For further info, photos and complete specs list, check Edge 2 Burled Maple detail page on Chorder.com or head over to Dean Guitars` official web site.

Dean Edge 2 Spalt Maple is the second of two upgraded Edge 2 models. Just like with the Burled Maple model standard Edge 2 is the basic model. Also, like on the previous model, other than the added top and color options, there are no differences in comparison to standard Edge 2. Dean Edge 3 comes in with a price tag of $399.00, which is around $150 more than Edge 2 models with upgraded tops. The extra bucks bring an active set of pickups, as well as vibrant, modern color options. Under the hood, a traditional Edge heart still pounds. Dean Razorback Bass is the first of its kind, arriving more than a decade of guitar series` debut. Solid and beveled razorback body, set-in neck and 24-fret fingerboard make this ferocious metal machine. DMT`s soapbar pickups provide a thunderous tone, able to cut through any mix. Naturally, Classic Black is the only option. For further info, photos and complete specs list, check Razorback Bass detail page on Chorder.com or head over to Dean Guitars` official web site.

Dean Exotica Supreme Cutaway A/E Bass is a refreshed variant of a last year`s model of the same name. Laminated tonewoods, sturdy hardware and tested and tried electronics make for a reliable and versatile bass. Tobacco Sunburst, with satin finish and chrome-plated hardware, is the only available color variant. Price is set at $299.00.
