The first ES-335 was introduced in 1958, it had dot inlays on the neck and no binding around it. The next incarnation of this legendary semi came out in 1959 and fingerboard had matching binding. In 2016 catalog lineup, Gibson Memphis pays tribute to both the 1958 "original dot neck" and 1959 "bound dot neck" models. Other than that, these two are virtually the same. But, their price tags differ greatly, 1958 model comes in at $4,499 and 1959 costs whooping $6,499. 2016 1959 ES-335 TD rocks a period-correct "Mickey Mouse Ears" body - a nickname acquired due to the specific shape of the lower and upper cutaways. Back, sides and top on this marvelous 335 are made of maple, spruce and poplar. 3-ply maple/poplar/maple laminates are used for the back, sides and the top, solid maple for center block and Adirondack spruce for bracing. Mahogany neck has a traditional C profile in the back and a 22-fret rosewood fingerboard on top (12" radius, dot inlays, 1.707" nylon nut). Active MHS humbuckers come with slightly unbalanced coils, bringing the beloved and sought-after PAF tone. They have the standard controls unit installed along with them. That means two volume knobs, two tone knobs and a three-way toggle pickup switch. Two-piece bridge unit (tune-o-matic bridge with stoptail bar in the back) and vintage Kluson tuners complete the specs list.
