Back in the 1949, the Esquire model was created and in 1950 the sales began. It had only one pickup in the bridge position and the two-pickup variant followed the same year. It was named Broadcaster. In 1951, due to the legal issues (Gretsch already marketed a drum kit of the same name) Fender started selling the two-pickup model under the Telecaster name. The name and the entire concept of a simple, flat single-cut guitar with 21-fret fingerboard, bolted maple neck and hardtail bridge survived to this very day. For 2015, Fender introduces the Standard Telecaster HH with, pretty much, the same set of specs. Of course, the tuning machines, wiring, bolt-on joint and the bridge construction have been updated and modernized many times over the course of the decades, but remain largely the same in concept and appearance. Even the 21-fret fingerboard with dot inlays remains the same. The main deviation from the classic Tele concept is, however, found in the pickups department where Fender installs the mandatory (for the 2015 Standard series models) Blacktop humbuckers with zebra-coil design. The new pickups combo corresponds to the needs of the contemporary rock, punk, alternative, grunge and even metal players. For the traditionalists, Fender throws in the push/pull switch (coil-splitting). Sealed Fender tuners, flat-top alder body, C-contoured maple neck, black plastic pickguard, classic controls unit and regular six-saddled hardtail bridge are also featured on this affordable Tele. Ghost Silver, Olympic White and Black comprise its color palette (a shared feature among the 2015 Standard series models).
