AF Electric Guitars by Ibanez

AF55 by Ibanez
Antique Brown Flat

Ibanez AF Series is a sub-division of the Artcore series of the hollow-bodied guitars. AF Series models are all fully hollow-bodied without any solid wood blocks within the body cavity. Traditional single cutaway archtop body is made of maple top, back and sides. The top panel features two "f" holes and glossy finish. Art1 bridge is Ibanez`s take on tune-o-matic bridge type and s paired with a trapezoid tailpiece. Humbuckers in the bridge and neck positions are also made by Ibanez and are controlled with master volume and tone knobs and a three-way toggle switch. Set mahogany neck features Artcore profile and rosewood fingerboard. 22 frets, dot inlays, 24-3/4" scale, chrome hardware, 12" fingerboard radius and Ibanez tuners complete the spec. This model costs around $330.

After proper setup, buzz on just one note on one fret, way down the fretboard, where the fingers rarely go. Put on flat wounds and wow!. Very impressed indeed by lovely sound. Same pickups as a lot of the more expensive ArtCores. The unusual finish will make this guitar a cult item. It's like Marmite. You will either love the looks or hate the looks. What is unescapable though is the quality of the sound. The minimalistic approach has given a great sound, and unless 'face' and fashion are important for you this is Ibanez's bargain. You must set it up properly though. My guess is, for those who upgrade the tuners and pickups, you will have a guitar that punches way, way, above it's weight. It's about time these types of finishes are available at the lower end of the market. For those who buy at Project Music, setup and a hard case are included. I bought mine from Thomann, so had to get the guitar setup properly.
