Guitars made of exotic or rare tonewoods have always been head-turners, and quite naturally so. Moreover, they brought their own distinct flavor along with otherworldly looks. But, it all came at a price. Usually a pretty steep one. Just look at the catalogs of some of the traditional or boutique brands, price tags can quite easily get into five and, on rare occasions, even six figure range. Ibanez AEW series was introduced several years ago to prove that guitars can look and sound exotic without breaking the bank. New AEW51 is the latest testament to the claim. This gorgeous single-cut guitar rocks one of the most interesting looks and specs lists found on an acoustic guitar in recent years. Back and sides of the body is made of a clever combination of walnut, spalted maple and rosewood. Top is, however, reserved for the traditional solid Sitka spruce soundboard. The neck is made of mahogany; it has a regular 14th fret dovetail joint and is topped with a 20-fret rosewood fingerboard. Electronics unit of the new AEW51 is made up of Fishman`s Sonicore pickup (under-saddle piezo unit) and Ibanez AEQ-SP2 preamp with volume, bass, treble and tuner controls. Ibanez die-cast tuners and fixed rosewood bridge complete the specs list.
