Back in 1958, Explorer and Flying V made their debut on the market. They were Gibson`s response to the Fender flood caused by Stratocaster and Telecaster. Flat-top guitars with simple construction, plain color options and modern design were slowly taking over, blowing the traditional LP and similar guitars out of the water. Despite the five-year long initial run, Explorer was finally retired in 1963 and was considered a major failure. It was simply too modern and too futuristic. It was revived in 1976 after several successful Explorer-like guitars made by other brands. That is the Explorer we all know and love. It is coming back in 2016 in the shape of Explorer 2016T. 2016T Explorer kicks off with a solid and classically shaped mahogany body; it is made of several pieces glued together. The neck is also made of mahogany, it`s set in (glued to the body) and made of a single piece of wood. In the back, it features the slim taper Explorer contour and has a 22-fret rosewood fingerboard on top (12" radius, 1.695" nut and dot inlays). 496R/500T set of open-coiled humbuckers will please the traditionalist Explorer fans, as it kicks out the most faithful recreation of 1976 Explorer tone ever heard. Two volume knobs and master tone complete the electronics section. Tune-o-matic bridge with stoptail bar in the back is a classic feature (found on virtually every Gibson and Epiphone Explorer ever), and Grover`s Mini Kidney tuners grace the vintage hockey stick headstock. Traditional 2016 Explorer costs $1,299 which is, considering it`s Gibson`s USA catalog, a really affordable price. Performance, looks and playability these almost $1,300 bucks bring are unparalleled on market today.
