Given the fact that it was introduced in late 1950s as a futuristic guitar, Explorer has aged exceptionally well as it still looks like it was forgotten in our reality by some space and time travelers. As all things too advanced for their time, Explorer had a pretty brief initial run. It ended in 1963, and Explorer was not reinstated into the catalog `till the mid `70s (after several successful revival attempts by other brands, most notably Dean). Since then, Explorer has been on-and-off member of the Gibson USA lineup. In 2016, there will be two Explorer models - one with traditional specs and the other with high performance specs. Explorer 2016 HP starts with a flat and pretty angular body made of mahogany. Slim taper-shaped mahogany neck completes the chassis of the new High Performance Explorer. 22-fret rosewood fingerboard covers the neck; it features 1.745" wide titanium-made zero-fret nut, dot inlays and 12" radius. Classic set of open-coiled 500T and 496R humbuckers delivers that hard rock/classic heavy metal tone of the late `70s and early `80s. Two volume knobs, master tone and noiseless three-way toggle switch comprise the controls unit. Other premium features include: white scratch plate, titanium-saddled tune-o-matic bridge, titanium string nut, noiseless pickup switch, fast-access neck heel, G Force robotic tuners, gold-plated jack and many more. With price tag of $1,649, HP Explorer is $350 more expensive than the Traditional Specs model and is made for players who like modern necks, wide fingerboards and having hi-tech gadgets on their axes.
