Mastodon, as their name hints, has one of the most massive tones in the heavy metal arena. This level of power, fullness and sheer ferocity sets new standards and throws a challenge to the rest of the bands. Mastodon`s main axeman, Bill Kelliher has finally got a signature Gibson model as a reward for both his fretboard skills and long-year faithfulness to Gibson Guitars. Bill`s first signature comes in the shape of the explorer. It is a solid-bodied axe made of mahogany. Flat top, set in neck joint and deep lower cutaway are featured on the body of this Explorer. Bill Kelliher`s Golden Axe is offered only in Gold Burst with nitrocellulose finish, creme binding and gold-plated hardware. Bridge section on this model is a classic two-piece, consisting of a tune-o-matic bridge and stoptail bar in the back. Conventional methods on`t get the player anywhere near Mastodon`s tone, so Gibson installs a pair of LACE Nitro Hemi humbuckers on this axe. These are the pickups Bill also uses. Master volume, two tones and a three-way toggle pickup switch comprise the controls unit. Push-pull switch on the master volume knob splits the bridge pickup and the push-pull switch on the neck tone splits the tone pickup. Set in mahogany neck is topped with a 22-fret fingerboard made of rosewood. Grover tuners are featured on the headstock.
