With this model Gibson Custom pays tribute to one of the most important metal guitarists of all time, one and only Kirk Hammett. For almost thirty years Kirk has dominated the metal stages with Metallica and contributed to countless anthems. In the early years Kirk played a 1979 Gigson Flying V guitar. In an effort to capture the essence and feel of Kirk`s original guitar Gibson Custom luthiers digitally scanned his guitar. Every measure, dent, bump and scratch were scanned and recorded. The final result is this, Gibson Custom Kirk Hammett Flying V. It comes only in black color with nitrocellulose finish. 150 copies will be made with 50 hand aged and signed by Kirk, and one hundred more only hand aged. This Flying V kicks off with a one piece body made of mahogany in conjunction with a mahogany neck. Body is flat and comes with same specs Kirk`s original guitar had. Big white plastic pickguard is also there. The bridge section is made up of tune-o-matic bridge and a stoptail bar. This combo is plated in chrome. Pickups on this axe are active EMGs, 81 in the bridge and EMG H in the neck position. These pickups are controlled through master volume and split tone control knobs. The pickup switch is classic Gibson appointment, it`s a three-way toggle. The neck is made of mahogany with maple spline. Neck is specially carved to be same as the thin contour on Kirk`s original guitar. Neck joint is, of course, a mortise & tenon. Fingerboard on this model is made of rosewood and it is equipped with a set of 22 jumbo frets, dot position inlays and 1.562" wide corian nut. The headstock also corresponds to the original specs as it features no top veneer. 24-3/4" scale, 12" fingerboard radius and Schaller tuners complete the specs list for this model. As for the pricing, Ebony Hand Aged variant costs $7,527 and those selected fifty copies with Kirk`s signature cost $9.880. This model was introduced as part of Gibson Custom`s 2012 Frankfurt Musikmesse exhibition.
