Mark Knopfler is one of the most influential guitarists and band leaders in history of rock music, especially from `70s-`80s period, when he lead the legendary Dire Straits. His signature model is one of the most sought after among numerous Fender Artist series guitars. It comes with a solid, double cut body made of ash. It`s flat and covered with a white pickguard against the Hot Rod Red color scheme with high gloss finish. Bridge section features a vintage synchronized tremolo bridge with chrome plating and string-through-body construction. Pickups are passive single coils, Texas Specials, to be exact. Master volume, two tone knobs and a five-position blade switch comprise the controls unit. Maple neck is bolted, equipped with C contour and topped with a 21-fret rosewood fingerboard.

While this is a fine Strat, I feel that it is not much different than your American Standard model which costs much less. The Texas Special pickups are good for blues and rock but they lack that sweet sparkle that makes strats sing. I also felt that a one color finish of red was not a good choice. It's obviously made well but most strats are...even Squier brands. I would like to see a maple fretboard too ala the early Dire Straits sound. A Rosewood fretboard plus Texas pickups equal a dark tone. These Artist Models IMHO are way too expensive for your average player. You can buy a Squier Stratocaster and put in better pickups and come closer to the original Mark Knopfler sound. Mark Knopfler can make any guitar sound great. It's a good looking guitar if you can afford it.
