Club Custom 4 is a model from the Club Custom series of acoustic bass guitars made by Michael Kelly Guitars. This model comes with single cutaway variant of the jumbo shaped body. It is available in natural color with satin finish. Satin finish protects the body just as well as the gloss, but allows the wood to breathe and project the tone better. Body is made of ash back and sides with cedar sound board on top. Top panel is equipped with several layers of binding and abalone-made rosette. In the bridge section Michael Kelly luthiers install a belly shaped bridge made of rosewood. Neck is made of mahogany and it comes with a set-in joint. Fingerboard is made of rosewood and it comes with 22 frets marked with dot inlays.

Had a bad run with these. First one arrived with a fault on the electrics which ran the battery down even when unplugged. Second one had the neck bent backwards on arrival. Too much to risk taking out with truss rod, if it had snapped I would have been liable. Usually truss rod adjustments are not an issue for me. Third one arrived and looked ok (small bit of varnish missing around sound hole and rough edge to top of headstock). Did not get chance to play for a few weeks but on picking it up to prepare for an acoustic job had high frets above the octave and around C on the A string. Real pity as they look well made and 95% of the finish is excellent and feel nice to play. The action is very low for a bass with such low string tension which may be the cause of the issue on the last one. Made in China which is not a bad thing but for the price more attention to build quality and setup instead of maintaining a large profit margin would have paid dividends. I sent an email to M K informing them of the issues and I know they contacted the UK distributor straight away which shows they were not happy. No further contact though and as there were no more available at the time (2 weeks after returning it) I received a full refund. May just have been unlucky with a bad batch but would recommend paying shop prices and try it before parting with your cash.
